Which Cars Do Thieves Avoid Stealing?
30.08.11
When you unknowingly park your car in a lot closely watched by car thieves, how appealing is your ride to them?
According to the Highway Loss Data Institute's report released this week, thieves hate vehicles that have sophisticated anti-theft mechanisms built in.
The institute found that the three most undesirable cars to steal are the Audi A6 all-wheel drive large luxury vehicle, the 2010 Mercury Mariner and the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox.
Not all anti-theft devices are effective deterrents, however, because thieves have crafted ways to get around them.
Ignition immobilizers, which prevent vehicles from being hot-wired, don't affect theft of property from a vehicle.
"Immobilizers are a good deterrent against joy-riding teenagers, but professional thieves can easily haul away an SUV on a flatbed truck," HLDI Vice President Kim Hazelbaker said.
The Highway Loss Date Institute analyzed insurance claims filed from 2008 to 2010 for their reports.
